All done for the round robin stages, and it all turned exactly the way I thought it would. Leinster timed their run perfectly, pausing last week to kindly keep Ulster involved, and then blasting Treviso away to claim the top spot. In other news, whew!
I only watched Connacht v Glasgow, and what a match! I didn’t think Connacht were going to do it, the Glaswegians have been in awesome form, it’s not just the quality of their players, it’s the patterns they play which are pretty well irresistible. But – don’t mess with Connacht in Galway! I’ve seldom seen Glasgow make so little impact in attack, Connacht were just squarming all over them, and they just kept on going backwards. And for their part, if Connacht got anywhere near Glasgow’s 22, they looked constantly threatening. Without doubt the red card for Sila Puafisi was pivotal, just as Glasgow seemed to be getting their act together. He obviously took Gregor Townsends half time exhortation to use their heads too literally.
What a fantastic result for Connacht, to cap off an amazing season. If they’d just beaten Treviso last weekend, they’d have topped the league.
Ulster picked up where they left off last weekend, with a convincing win over the Ospreys. That was some result!
And Munster secured their Champions Cup place with a good win over the Scarlets, coming into form exactly when they needed to. Leinster came 6th last year, and it didn’t hurt them too badly this season.
So it’ll be Connacht v Glasgow, in Galway, again! And then the match up I was hoping for, Leinster v Ulster in the RDS!
