Leinster gave the RDS something to shout about on Friday with a 9 try thumping of Treviso. The Italians are no Toulon, but you can only play what’s in front of you. Leinster played the sunny kind of rugby that suited the day and the crowd. The win keeps them on top, and the bonus point keeps them slowly pulling away from the chasers. I thought Heaslip was very impressive, there was a little more space for him to show his running game.
Things weren’t so sunny for Ulster though. They just have no luck, a few weeks ago they were riding high in the league, and looking forward to a home Heineken Cup fixture. Now they are plagued by injuries and suspensions, out of the HC, and teetering on the edge of not making the Rabo play offs. Glasgow were efficient if not exactly inspiring in their home win, flattered by the try that never was. But in fairness, the Glaswegians are finding form at the right time, and helped by some appalling tackling from Ulster, continued their journey up the table. Ulster need a lot of grit and just a little luck to get themselves out of this.
In Galway, it was the season of giving, as Connacht gift wrapped two tries for Munster, and Munster returned the favour right at the end. Connacht have 80% of a good team, a lot of good young backs, but no lpolish. Munster didn’t fire on all cylinders, laboring away for the bonus point try, but they got it. That wasn’t anywhere near their strongest team though, it was about a pass as a warm up for Toulon.
